Sports nutrition for beginners: where to start

2026-06-27 · 6 min read

A beginner does not need a cupboard full of tubs. Food and training come first, then 2–3 supplements with proven benefit. The rest can wait and is optional.

The base that works

Three pillars for most people: protein (to hit your target), creatine (strength and recovery) and omega-3 (general health). This stack is enough to start.

Vitamin D and magnesium

Vitamin D is often deficient, and magnesium supports muscles, nerves and sleep. These are cheap, sensible additions to the base, especially in winter and under stress.

What to hold off on

Fat burners, exotic pre-workouts and “trendy” amino acids are not needed at first — their effect is small compared with the basics, diet and sleep.

FAQ

Where to start on a tight budget?

Start with protein and creatine monohydrate — the best value for money. Add the rest later.

Do beginners need BCAAs?

If you already hit your protein from food and powder, separate BCAAs add little. They are not a first purchase.
