Pre-workouts: what’s inside and how to choose
2026-06-27 · 5 min read
A pre-workout gives energy, focus and “pump” before training. Most of the effect comes from caffeine and blood-flow ingredients, so it is the formula that matters, not the flashy tub.
What’s inside
Usually caffeine (energy and focus), citrulline and arginine (blood flow and pump), beta-alanine (endurance) and often creatine. Sometimes tyrosine and taurine are added for focus.
How to choose
Check the caffeine dose (for your tolerance) and whether citrulline and beta-alanine are in working doses. Avoid “proprietary blends” that hide component doses under one total number.
Caution
Do not take a pre-workout in the second half of the day — caffeine will disturb sleep. Beginners should start with half a serving, and be cautious with blood-pressure or heart issues.
FAQ
Why does a pre-workout make my skin tingle?
That is beta-alanine — it causes a harmless mild tingling (paresthesia). The effect is temporary and not dangerous.
Can I train without a pre-workout?
Of course. A cup of coffee, decent food and good sleep work just as well. A pre-workout is a convenience, not a necessity.
