Hydration and electrolytes: drinking water around training
2026-06-27 · 4 min read
Water is needed by every cell, and during training and heat we lose not only water but salts — electrolytes. A shortfall hurts endurance and focus and can cause cramps.
What electrolytes are
These are minerals — sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium — responsible for fluid balance and muscle and nerve function. With sweat we mostly lose sodium, so in heat water alone can fall short.
When you need supplements
For long or intense training, in heat and with heavy sweating, electrolyte drinks help maintain endurance and avoid cramps. For a short easy session, water is enough.
How to drink
Drink steadily through the day, not all at once. During training — in small sips. A simple guide: light-colored urine usually means normal hydration.
FAQ
Do I need electrolytes every workout?
No. For short, light sessions water is enough. Electrolytes matter for long efforts, heat and heavy sweating.
Can I drink too much water?
Yes, excess water without salts can dilute electrolytes. So for long efforts it helps to combine water with electrolytes.
