EAA vs BCAA: the difference and what to choose

2026-06-27 · 4 min read

BCAAs are three amino acids, while EAAs are all nine essential ones the body cannot make itself. Muscle protein synthesis needs the full set, so EAAs often look more logical.

The difference

BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine) trigger protein synthesis, but without the other essential aminos there is nothing to “build” muscle from. EAAs contain all nine, so they work more completely.

What to choose

If choosing between separate BCAAs and EAAs, EAAs make more sense. But both are only needed when you fall short on protein — otherwise protein and food are enough.

When they’re needed at all

EAAs make sense for fasted training, strict cutting or a protein shortfall (for example vegans). Otherwise complete protein from powder and food already contains all the EAAs.

FAQ

Are EAAs better than protein?

No, protein already contains all the EAAs plus complete protein. Separate EAAs are a niche tool, not a replacement for protein.

When to take EAAs?

Usually during or around training, especially fasted. Exact timing matters less than your total protein for the day.
