Do you actually need BCAAs: an honest take
2026-06-27 · 5 min read
BCAAs are three branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are heavily marketed, but not everyone needs them — it depends on whether you hit your protein from food.
What they are and how they work
Of the three, leucine is the key one — it triggers muscle protein synthesis. BCAAs support muscles during training and reduce their breakdown.
Who really benefits
BCAAs make sense for fasted training, strict cutting, or people who fall short on protein (for example on a plant-based diet). In those cases they help protect muscle.
When they’re a waste
If you hit your protein from food and powder, separate BCAAs add almost nothing — the needed aminos are already in complete protein. The money is better spent on protein or creatine.
FAQ
BCAA or protein — what to choose?
For most people protein is the better buy: it contains all the BCAAs plus complete protein. BCAAs are a narrow tool for specific situations.
When should I take BCAAs?
Usually before or during training — especially if you train fasted. Otherwise timing does not matter much.
